Inventory can be written down if the value is reduced. What Items are Eligible for a Write-Down? Companies can reduce incidents of inventory write-downs through effective inventory management strategies like avoiding excessive inventory, reviewing order frequency, tracking trends in demand and implementing precautionary measures to avoid theft or damage. An inventory write-down impacts both the income statement and the balance sheet-reducing net income, retained earnings and shareholder equity.Inventory often loses value because of obsolescence, theft, decrease in consumer demand, damage, spoilage, misplacement and shifts in the market. An inventory write-down differs from an inventory write-off because it deals with inventory losing some of its value, not all of its value. If inventory loses value, an accounting process called an inventory write-down is required to show on the financial statements that the net realizable value is less than anticipated. The journal entry on the income statement would appear as such: The company only had a few of that particular model left. Now, let’s say the amount of the write-down is not significant. Because the cases in the inventory are becoming obsolete, they drop in value from $25 each to $10, a difference of $15 each. Case City’s current inventory of phone cases will not fit the new device. Inventory Write-Down Journal Entry ExampleĪs an example, online retailer Case City sells phone cases and a new version of the most popular cell phone brand has come out. Ultimately, an inventory write-down reduces the value of the ending inventory for the period, which has implications on both the income statement and balance sheet of a business. This ensures accounting accuracy and lessens tax liability. The adjustment must be made as soon as possible. When an inventory’s fair market value drops below its book value, a journal entry is made in the inventory write-down expense account or cost of goods sold (COGS) account depending on the significance of the write-down. Let’s answer the burning question here: what exactly is an inventory write-down? The term refers to a required accounting process that must be conducted when inventory decreases in value-but does not lose its value completely. Considering its implications, it’s valuable for companies to understand what it is, how to do it and inventory management techniques to reduce the need for write-downs. The write-down impacts the balance and income statement of a company-and ultimately affects the business’s net income and retained earnings. Factors like changing market conditions, obsolescence, damage, theft and other circumstances can cause its value to depreciate-which must be noted for accounting purposes.Īn inventory write-down is the required process used to reflect when an inventory loses value and its market value drops below its book value. The only problem however, is that simplified controls or not, you’ll still be moving Nigel’s arm as if it were tied to an exposed electrical outlet. That’s an operation that requires several very precise cuts on the intestines. Take for instance, your standard Kidney transplant surgery. And when you’re tasked with removing and transplanting organs, precision isn’t exactly a necessary tool in your operating room.Īs the disembodied arm of Nigel Burke, players have to move around using the left stick, while controlling the hand and its fingers with the right analogue stick and the bumpers, or the motion controls of the Dual Shock controller to control hand angles. What the game is in essence, is a sandbox experience where players can fool around in the chest cavity of a victim patient, curing whatever ails them with good ol’ blunt force trauma and an endless supply of anaesthesia. “Surgeon Simulator isn’t exactly brain surgery, although players do get to do actual brain surgery during the course of several operations. There’s nothing really new in the way of content, so it’s all really the same operations you’ve possibly already done. We’ve already said the joke’s worn a bit thin now – and here, within VR, it’s stretched to the point of transparency. Once you come to terms with how shoddy its controls are, and how to get around them rather than try to work with them, the game is as silly as it’s ever been, delivering on its promise of comedic surgical mishaps. It only becomes worse with the DualShock, which relies on the sometimes obscured light emanating from the controller. While it could be reasonably argued that it’s all part of Surgeon Simulator’s quirky core design, this takes it to absurd levels. If part of your hand happens to come in to contact with an in-game solid object, it becomes skeletal and floaty, so you have to pull back before trying to go back in. Worse is that the game’s odd collision detection continually fights against the player. Scalpels, tweezer and other small instruments are sometimes impossible to grasp. It can be a nightmare just to pick up a tool, let a long try to use it. But that’s not the way it actually works. Or it should feel like you’re bunching a scalpel betwixt your thumb and index finger to allow for precision slicing. You’d imagine it would feel like you’re wielding the hammer you’ll use to smash open a ribcage. With both control schemes, you’ll have to depress buttons on the controller to activate specific fingers – so holding something firmly in your hand requires the sort of squeezing you’d imagine would feel natural. Surgeon Simulator’s never been accuracy or precision, but the implementation of its controls in VR is often such an impediment that it can make the game wholly unplayable, detracting from its whimsy. Controls – whether you opt for the pair of wands, or a single DualShock 4 – are frankly horrible. Somehow, in translation, everything’s gone through to the wrong extreme. It should have been simple to translate Surgeon Simulator’s imprecise controls to VR, using the already sometimes wonky Move controllers to great effect. It’s not that the idea doesn’t translate well, rather just that it’s been implemented horribly. I’d though that operating on poor old Bob again, just within a VR world this time, would be a jolly good, terribly silly time. Doing mundane, rote tasks – the stuff people habitually call work – within virtual reality gives it a new life, and makes that sort of humdrum oddly enjoyable. It seems a natural fit for the platform, especially after playing games like Job Simulator. When I heard that the perpetually silly Surgeon simulator would be making its way to Virtual Reality platforms, I was excited. That said, there are still a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to make sure that you and your pet remain safe and comfortable during your flight. Now, with a new policy banning these breeds from flying on all airlines, the rate of pet injury should reduce significantly. That’s only ~0.0048%! United Airlines has the highest rate of pet deaths, although it could be linked to the fact that until recently, they had allowed short-nosed breeds to fly. commercial air carriers last year, and only 24 of those animals died while in transit. According to the Chicago Tribune, ~507,000 animals flew on U.S. This couldn’t be further from the truth! If you look at the statistics, it is actually VERY safe to fly with your pet. And while those accidents are truly unfortunate, it tends to paint the image that flying with a pet is dangerous. We’ve all seen the tragic headlines circulate every now and then talking about how a pet was injured during air travel.

The teacher needs to be able to see that the students understand what they are reading and what is happening to the main character, how he is coping, what his actions are, and how this applies to the students' lives as well. I think the students needed more direction when they met in their books clubs, and they also needed to be provided with an activity, project, or writing assignment to complete regarding the concepts discussed instead of just talking about it. It could work for some students, but I think there needed to be other options depending on the learning styles and levels of the students. Boring! Plus, the graphic organizer was very juvenile. They were basically just told to "discuss" these concepts and then fill our their graphic organizer on the main events in that section. I felt that the concepts discussed each meeting time were good (courage, change, responsibility, difficult choices, and how all of these concepts applied to the students' lives as well as the main characters), but the students didn't really have to do any meaningful assignments each meeting time. I like that there was choice provided to the students on which books that they wanted to read, but you also have to be careful that the boys don't just choose books that their friends choose so that they can be in the same group. I think there needs to be shorter reading sections due, as well as more meeting times to really get into the novel and make it meaningful. In addition, I think dividing each book into only four sections and having a section due each time the groups met was a little too much. Doing a book talk on each book to get the students excited and interested is a great idea that was suggested. Of course, this is just a "suggested" book list, and the author does include the Guys Read website link to find more books. Most of the books were very old or not very exciting I definitely think there are better books our there for boys that could be suggested. First of all, the suggested book list that the author of this lesson provided was not very good. However, I felt that it was very broad and didn't live up to the potential it could possess. Overall, I thought this lesson had a great concept behind it. They use the persuasion map from the RWT website to complete this assignment and refer to their graphic organizers to find three main reasons that support their thesis. Finally, students write a persuasive essay that discusses ways in which the main character displayed or failed to display courage throughout the novel. As they read, the students must fill out a graphic organizer from the RWT website to record the main events of the novel. Students also meet in their book clubs every session and discuss these elements. As the students read their selected books, they have whole-class discussions on courage, what it means in their daily lives, how the main character in their book displays courage, difficult choices, responsibility, and change. The students are broken into groups according to which book they chose, and they have to break the book into four sections and set a reading schedule. The teacher starts out by discussing the concept of courage with her male students, and then allows the students to each choose one of five books that have a male protagonist. Essentially, this lessons is like what we did with our book clubs. I thought this would be an interesting lesson to analyze to see how this particular teacher motivates boys to read, and what books she chose for her male students to read. I chose this lesson to review because in class we have been discussing ways to motivate boys to read, as well as exploring resources about book directed towards males. Students read and discuss their chosen text with peers, use online tools to review the main events, and draft a persuasive essay about their novel. Each of the recommended novels deals in some way with the concept of courage, and students are asked to consider how individuals can demonstrate courage through their everyday actions. In this multisession lesson, students choose one such novel to read and study. The Read Write Think Lesson I chose to analyze is "Boys Read: Considering Courage in Novels." Research suggests that many boys are drawn to books that spark discussion and offer positive role models. Compress (or one of his balls as we saw in the fight against Sand Hero Snatch) can make contact, the enemy is as good as dead. Regardless of how strong his enemy is, as long as Mr. IMO this places him already on par with Overhaul and Shigaraki in terms of having a touch of death quirk. In practice, this means that instead of touching his enemies and compressing their entire body (therefore risking a rescue or an escape) Mister could simply choose to compress the torso, head, etc.of his enemies, therefore, killing them instantly. Compress can basically compress specific body parts. This subreddit supports Spoiler Tags! The rise of remote working has led to many of us creating workstations in our own homes as opposed to setting up shop in a cafe or coworking space. The latter doesn’t look especially science-fictional until you flip it over and its Egyptian scene morphs into a futuristic cityscape with a fleet of rockets heading for the stars. The meticulous airbrush paintings of Shusei Nagaoka dominate this era and idiom, thanks in part to his covers for two of the biggest albums of 1977: Out Of The Blue by Electric Light Orchestra, and All ’n All by Earth, Wind & Fire. The exploitation of SF imagery on the covers of funk, soul and disco albums was much more widespread than the jazz world, and lasted long enough to join up with the emergence of synth-pop and electro in the early 1980s. 6 (1971) with a spaceship cover by Roger Dean here’s Herbie Hancock on the cover of Thrust (1974) piloting his keyboard-driven craft over Machu Picchu while an alarmingly swollen Moon seems ready to crash into the Earth. You see this in the music packaging of the period, and not only in the obvious enclaves of progressive rock. Many different labels may be attached to the 1970s but it was definitely the science-fiction decade as much as anything else, a time when the use of SF imagery became a widespread trend, often superficially applied but there all the same.
